Academic Policies

Grading Policy

No letter grades will be given at the Pre-K and Kindergarten levels. Pre-K reporting will be handled by written comments and parent-teacher conferences. At the Kindergarten level a checklist of tasks/content areas mastered will be used to indicate progress. At the first-grade level, grades of E (Excellent), S (Satisfactory), N (Needs improvement), and U (Unsatisfactory) will be given during the first semester and will continue to be used throughout the year for Social Studies, Science, Conduct, Music, Art, and Religion. During the second semester the grading scale will be used for first grade Reading, Math, English, and Spelling. Second through fifth grades will use the grading scale throughout the year in all subjects except Music, Art, Conduct, Religion, and P.E.

A 94-100
B 86-93
C 77-85
D 70-76
F 0-69

The indicators at all levels are based on the Louisiana state requirements. Written comments will be included. Promotions or retention will be based on the child's progress according to state requirements.

Reporting to Parents: Parent-Teacher conferences will be held as needed.

Student Behavior Policy

It is always better to "catch" children doing the right things and to give praise and encouragement. Lafayette Lutheran School strives to provide an atmosphere that gives children a sense of security, an understanding of responsibility, and a feeling of success. This positive approach is followed at LLS. Naturally, it is expected that children will follow teacher directions, and each child will be encouraged to do so. If a serious problem arises, each teacher will hold students accountable for any disorderly conduct in and around the school campus. The following consequences of inappropriate behavior will be followed:

Warning: The teacher talks to the student about how to improve his/her behavior. The student is encouraged to define appropriate behavior with the teacher's help.
Redirection: The child is redirected to another activity in another part of the classroom.
Time Out: The student remains in the classroom but is isolated from the group for a period of time. The student is asked to return to the group when he/she thinks the problem is corrected.
Contact Parent: The student is sent to the Headmaster, and a call is made to the parent(s). The teacher and student explain to the Headmaster and the parent(s) what happened; and student, parent, teacher and Headmaster work out the problem.

Field Trips

First-hand experiences are an important part of early childhood learning. The teacher will plan field trips, and parents will be asked to assist with additional supervision. Children going on the field trips must have appropriate permission forms signed by the parents and returned to the teacher, or they will not be allowed to go on the trip. Forms will be available in the school office, or you can find one here.
