First Lutheran Church

First Lutheran Church is a fellowship of committed Christians celebrating the Good News of Jesus Christ in Word and Sacrament - learning, growing, and giving in response to God's gifts to us and sharing with others through word and deed the forgiveness and love of God in Jesus Christ.

Incorporated in 1947 and re-organized in 1954, First Lutheran Church serves all of Lafayette Parish and has approximately 500 baptized members from more than 175 households. First Lutheran has been serving her membership and Lafayette from her present location since November 1982.

What Lutherans Believe

  • We believe that God the Father is our Creator, Jesus is our Savior, and the Holy Spirit is our Sanctifier.
  • We accept the Bible as the Word of God, the divinely inspired record of God's redemptive act in Christ, and the only authority for faith and life.
  • We teach that all people are sinners and that salvation is a gift from God, received through faith in Christ.
  • We define the Church as the fellowship of all who confess Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior.
  • We celebrate two sacraments, Baptism and Holy Communion, as visible, tangible acts of God's love.
  • We live, not according to a formula of do's and don'ts, but in the freedom of Christian love, responsibility, and servanthood. Instead of condemnation, words such as forgiveness, Good News, love, joy, and acceptance describe the loving relationship we experience with God and one another.
